Joe Benac HIS FAMILY IS HIS LIFE
I WAS BORN IN A VERY SMALL TOWN IN NORTHERN MICHIGAN, BEAUTIFUL LAKES AND LOTS OF FARMS YOU SEE A NOW AND THEN PHOTO OF ME HERE.
My handsome dad above left and mom with my sister up north at an apple orchard. My parents were hardworking my father briefly worked for General Motors but did not like the city and thus returned to Hillman were both my parents had grown up on farms. My dad worked hard in the Limestone Quarry in Rogers City for US Steel for 30 years eventually becoming the Foreman running it for his last ten years, My mom was a Beautician until allergies stopped her from doing hair full time. I was the second oldest of 5 kids 3 boys and 2 girls. I am the only child to complete a college degree and move away from the small village I grew up in.
My home town is Hillman, Michigan, I was born in Pontiac, Mi. I spent all of my life in Michigan with the exception of 2 trips to Florida before I turned 18. My interests include current events, and a lot of sports. Sports were something I always enjoyed and played football, basketball, track and baseball. I even played on a couple teams while serving in the Air Force. I have dedicated many hours in support of the many professional and collegiate teams in Michigan. I left home at age 18, after 1 year of community college and no idea what I wanted to do as a career. I joined the United States Air Force. I was unsure about the choice but I become a Air Force Medic. I met my wife who also was serving in the Air Force at Wurtsmith in Oscoda, Mi. After 8 years we went back to college together and earned our nursing degrees. I am 3 classes from completing my BSN degree. While in he Air Force I lived in Texas and Michigan, funny I really didn’t travel a lot. It wasn’t until after I completed my RN degree and became a Director of Nursing did I go to Chicago and Long beach, CA, and San Antonio, TX for educational seminars.
I left the Air Force and attended Kirtland Community College in the rural town of Roscommon, Michigan. After 2 years I completed my ADN degree as a Registered Nurse. I worked in the hospital, hospice care, rehab nursing and home care. Currently I am 3 classes away from my BSN degree. I hope to do some work with Veterans and work in a VA hospital or clinic.

TRAVEL Florida, Texas, California, Chicago, Ohio
Interests/Hobbies Sports, Movies, Science Fiction, Pets, Cookouts
Travel has not been something my family has been able o do a lot. We all took a road trip to Daytona Beach. We had a great time and the weather was pretty nice. He funny part was leaving Michigan and getting detoured at night in a bad area of Detroit. The kids were watching portable dvds and freaked out when we got lost. The kids were sure we would be car jacked. Not so funny when we were lost but pretty humorous later. The only other funny but not funny event was landing in San Diego and learning we were misinformed as to our distance from a seminar and learned we had to take a bus 3 hours to get here.
Cultures The cultures of my trips to San. Antonio and Chicago showed me that in the larger cities there are very diverse groups of people. I have noticed very large amount of Hispanic populations in both San. Antonio and San. Diego almost to the point that I really felt like I was not in the United States. Chicago had many different groups of people including all nationalities and many Arabic people. I noticed a lot of migrant type individuals and was well aware that many were not American Citizens. My experiences were enjoyable and I found the people to be polite and interesting. The thing I did not like was he Chicago street people and those trying to make money on travelers. That was a bit of a pain.
I served 8 years in the Air force, the most interesting people are found there. These men and women are from all over the United States. The most interesting Staff Sergent I worked with was American with a French mother born in Germany and married to a Spanish girl from Spain. I think he was a bit confused a times because he grew up speaking French, English and German, then he met his wife in Spain and learned Spanish. I loved my experience and am very proud.
I do have some French in my family tree based on what my grandfather told me years ago. He said we came to America through Canada and settled with the Indians. That he said was and interesting relationship. Reading about the French made me think of my little economy car that is cheap to drive and frugal on gas. This is much like the French who like to make the money last
I feel that the cultures I have been exposed to are limited. I have never left the United States and have some difficulty with cultures and understanding others because I have limited experience in this area. I do have to say cultures are very wide in variety depending on the area even within the United States. My experiences with the Military and the people in both Texas and California did show me that many of the people I met were from poor communities and limited ability or opportunity for higher education. The small own I grew up in also had many people living with limited income and not many jobs. I have known some very humble and thankful people for the little they have and are happy. Many Americans want a lot but also many are just happy to work and eat each day. Immigration has truly made the U. S. what it is today. Unlike any other country.
Perception I cannot say a lot about Americans and how they are perceived but I can speak from the experiences I have had learning from the people I met growing up and my friend from Korea. The exchange students always said that Americans were believed to be rich not the case but perceived to be. My roommate in the Air Force always said we Americans were very selfish and cocky. He also said we were not as respectful as we should be to our parents and grandparents. That is most of what I can recall how I think people see the American. My friend Sang Cho was a great loyal friend who taught me to be dependable and determined to work hard as a Air Force Medic. This eye to me sees the world, precepion depends on whose eye it is.
Today I begin to understand French culture I only hope tomorrow I can experience it and many other cultures. Part of my culture is what you have viewed in my slides and this page defines me and what is important to me. To me that is culture.
