POLITICS • Became Georgia’s 76 th governor in 1971. • Served as chairman of the Southern Regional Education Board, the Appalachian Regional Commision, the Coastal Plains Regional Action Planning Commision, and the Southern Growth Policies Board. • Became Democratic National Committee campaign chairman for the 1974 congressional elections. • Won Democratic party nomination at the 1976 Democratic National Convention and was elected President on November 2, 1976. • Served as President from January 20, 1977 to January 20, 1981.
