Fixture • A fixture is defined as a device used for holding and locating a component or work piece securely in a definite position but it does not guide the cutting tool. • The fixture is a tool which holds the work piece with the machine at desired location. • Its name is derived from the fact that it is fixed to the machine.
Advantages of Jig & Fixture 1. They are used to assist production process by reducing cost of production. 2. The semiskilled or unskilled worker can handle the operation with jig & fixture. 3. High degree of accuracy can be achieved with lesser work content. 4. Using drill jigs increases production rate. 5. The fixture reduce the nonproductive loading, unloading and fixing time of the work piece.
Difference between Jig & Fixture Sr. No Jig Fixture 1 A jig holds, locates as well as guide the tool. A fixture holds and position the work but does not guide the tool. 2 Jigs are lighter in weight. Fixtures are heavier in construction. 3 Clamping the jig with work table is not required. Fixtures are bolted rigidly with the work table. 4 Jigs are used for holding the work and guiding the tool in drilling, reaming or tapping. Fixtures are used to holding the work in milling, grinding, planning operations. 5 Jigs comes in direct contact with the cutting tool. Fixtures never comes in contact with the cutting tool.
