ABOUT JIGJIGA UNIVERSITY • Established in 2007 • like other higher academic institutions has three main thematic work areas and these are: Academic, research and community service • Excellency area: Pastoral and Agro-Pastoral Studies
COLLEGE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES • Established in 2008 • Runs both graduate and post-graduate programs in 11 departments • With 200 academic staff and more than 2500 students • Has full fledged research coordination office and has been involved in undertaking demand driven and problem solving researches and conferences on various issues with UNICEF, UNHCR, ICRC, IRC and regional bureaus such as BOLSA, BOWCA, RVERA, Regional Culture and Tourism Bureau • Commenced Jigjiga University Migration Series in 2016.
JJU MIGRATION SERIES • Commenced by the CSS&H in 2017 • First Migration Series “Migration, Trafficking in Persons and Child Labor Abuse in Ethiopia” In collaboration with IOM • Second Migration Series “Conflict, Migration, and Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs) in Ethiopia” In collaboration with AAU • Third Migration Series “'Conflict, Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs) and the Search for Durable Solutions in Ethiopia” in collaboration with EFRSSI under Minstry of Peace, UNHCR, ICRC and PDN
• Scaling up its good start, the college has now embarked on making necessary preparations for establishing an academic institute named 'Institute of Migration Refugees and Displacement Studies'. • Aimed at breaking the existing academic draught by conduct research and publish key findings and scholarly works in the field of migration, refugees and displacement studies. • Will also host a Masters and Degree Programs on various fields related to Migration and Displacement and admit students from the Eastern Africa.
VISION AND MISSION • Vision To create a conscious nation where the dynamic aspects of migration refugees and displacement are well understood and effectively responded to • Mission To serve as a leading Institute for the study of contemporary and future migration and displacement dynamics within Ethiopia through an integrated and interdisciplinary research, teaching and community engagement
RESEARCHES AT HAND • Dynamics of Migration in the Somali Region • Investigating Why Somali region failed to attract and engage in Diaspora • Child Trafficking in Fafan Zone, Somali Region • Impacts of remittance on migration and migrants funded by Cities Alliance • Local governments as actors for sustainable integration of displaced populations in the context of international aid: A joint research project of the German Development Institute (DIE), the Institute of Migration and Displacement Studies in Jigjiga University (IMDS) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies at Addis Ababa University (IPSS)
