Jiayuguan Pass Located in the western end of Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, Jiayuguan Pass is the main part of the western end of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty. It has been the first pass of Hexi region since ancient times. Initially built in the early Ming Dynasty (1372), Jiayuguan Pass underwent a constructing duration of 168 years. It is the most majestic and rugged pass among more than 1000 passes along the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty and has been perfectly preserved. Jiayuguan Pass has the overlapped structure consisting of three layers of defense (inner city, outer city and moat). It was connected with the Great Wall to constitute a military defensive system of “One flint every five li; one frusta every ten li; one fortress every thirty li; and one city every one hundred li. ” The present Jiayuguan Pass mainly consists of the inner city of which the perimeter is 640 m, the area is 25, 000 square meters and the height is 10. 7 m. It is built of compacted ocher, with the wall in the west side reinforced by bricks. The inner city has two gates: the eastern “Guanghua Gate” which means “purple mist rising from the east and brilliance illuminating all things” and the western “Rouyuan Gate” which means “stabilizing the western regions by means of pacification”. On the gate dais is a three-storey gable-and-hip-roof type building. There are two enclosures of Barbican entrances in the eastern and western gate respectively. Outside the western gate is a wall built around the inner city and connected to the southern and northern wall in the outer city. “Jiayuguan Pass” gate is the connector of the inner city and the outside, with a Jiayuguan Pass Tower built on it. Moreover, the inner rampart of Jiayuguan Pass was built with forty buildings including the embrasure watchtower, the corner tower, the garret and the strobe tower. In the Jiayuguan Pass stand the official residence for the general, the Well Pavilion and the Wenchang Pavilion, while outside the eastern gate stand the Guandi Temple, the monumental archway and the opera tower, etc. all of these buildings constitute the exquisite layout and imposing manner of Jiayuguan Pass, which is echoing at a distance with Shanhaiguan Pass, “The First Pass in the World” far away from it.
