Engine Types There are FOUR basic types of Jet Engine Turbo Jet Turbo Fan Turbo Prop Turbo Shaft In this lesson we shall examine Turbo Props and Turbo Shafts.

Turbo Prop The turboprop is basically a turbojet with an extra turbine designed to absorb the energy remaining in the gas stream after sufficient has been removed to drive the compressor. The turboprop is a very efficient power unit for relative low speed, low altitude aircraft. It is High Torque at Low Speed Examples are the 748 and F 27, and the Transall C-160 and Atlantic.

Turbo Prop Tyne C 160 Transall, Shorts Belfast, Brequet Atlantic, Avro Lincoln, Canadair CL 44, Vickers Vanguard, Aeritalia 222. Has a two shaft layout. HP Reduction Gearbox Compressor Prop Shaft (via Reduction Gearbox) LP Compressor HP Turbine LP Turbine The HP turbine drives an HP compressor, and the LP turbine drives an LP compressor and propeller through a reduction gearbox.

Turbo Shaft The turbo shaft is virtually a turboprop without a propeller. It is Small Size but High Power. The main use of the turbo shaft is the helicopter and industrial and marine application, including power and pumping stations, hovercraft and ships. Examples are the Lynx, Chinook and the Sea King.

The Ramjets have no moving parts. They use the engine's forward motion to compress the incoming air, and the Fuel Injectors to cause combustion. Air Inflow Exhaust Fuel Injectors Ramjets cannot produce thrust at zero airspeed, so cannot move an aircraft from a standstill. They require assisted take off to accelerate to a speed where they can produce thrust. Ramjets work most efficiently at supersonic speeds around Mach 3, and can operate up to Mach 6.
