Jesus, the king, rules over the nations & in His people Ps. 2 • The nations try to stop the reign of Christ 1 Why are the nations in an uproar And the peoples devising a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, 3 "Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!" Acts 4: 27 "For truly in this city there were gathered together against Thy holy servant Jesus, whom Thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
Jesus, the king, rules over the nations & in His people Ps. 2 • God will install His king 4 -6 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying, 6 "But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain. ” Acts 2: 33
Jesus, the king, rules over the nations & in His people Ps. 2 • The Son speaks 7 -9 7 "I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. Acts 13: 33; Rom. 1: 4; Eph. 1: 20 -22 8 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. Heb. 1: 2, 4; Rev. 17: 14; 19: 16 9 'You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware. ” Rev. 12: 5; 19: 15
Jesus, the king, rules over the nations & in His people Ps. 2 • Double rule of the King 10 -12 10 Now therefore, 0 kings, show discernment; Take warning, 0 judges of the earth. 11 Worship the LORD with reverence And rejoice with trembling. 12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. Blessings to those who take refuge in Him. 12 b How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!
Ps. 45: 1 -9 • Destroy nations that oppose Him - God’s anointed 5 Your arrows are sharp; The peoples fall under You; Your arrows are in the heart of the King's enemies. 6 Your throne, 0 God, is forever and ever; A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your fellows.
Ps. 89 • Praises the LORD’s loving‑kindness, faithfulness & mercy 11, I 2 will sing of the lovingkindness of the LORD forever; To all generations I will make known Thy faithfulness with my mouth. 2 For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens Thou wilt establish Thy faithfulness. ” • Quotes the LORD about the seed of David 3, 4 3 “I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant, 4 I will establish your seed forever, And build up your throne to all generations.
Ps. 89 • David’s seed 26, 27 26 “He will cry to Me, ‘Thou art my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation. ’ 27 “I also shall make him My first-born, The highest of the kings of the earth. • Reign forever 28, 29 28 “My lovingkindness I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall be confirmed to him. 29 “So I will establish his descendants forever, And his throne as the days of heaven.
Ps. 89 • Permanence of rule 34 -37 34 “My covenant I will not violate, Nor will I alter the utterance of My lips. 35 “Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David. 36 “His descendants shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me. 37 “It shall be established forever like the moon, And the witness in the sky is faithful. ” Rev. 1: 5; 1 Cor. 15: 24, 25
Ps. 110 • He will rule in the midst of His enemies 1 -2 1 The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet. " 2 The LORD will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, "Rule in the midst of Your enemies. " • His people volunteer, 3 3 Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power; In holy array, from the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew.
Ps. 110 • Works as a priest & king for His people 4 -7 4 The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind, "You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek. " 5 The Lord is at Your right hand; He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath. 6 He will judge among the nations, He will fill them with corpses, He will shatter the chief men over a broad country. 7 He will drink from the brook by the wayside; Therefore He will lift up His head.
David's last Psalm 2 Samuel 23 • God is speaking through him 1 -2 1 Now these are the last words of David the son of Jesse declares, The man who was raised on high declares, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel, 2 "The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue.
David's last Psalm 2 Samuel 23 • Ideal ruler (A great blessing to His people) 3, 4 3 "The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me, 'He who rules over men righteously, Who rules in the fear of God, 4 Is as the light of the morning when the sun rises, A morning without clouds, When the tender grass springs out of the earth, Through sunshine after rain. '
David's last Psalm 2 Samuel 23 • Solomon fulfilled this to a limited degree, but its full meaning is found in Christ, 5 5 "Truly is not my house so with God? For He has made an everlasting covenant with me, Ordered in all things, and secured; For all my salvation and all my desire, Will He not indeed make it grow?
David's last Psalm 2 Samuel 23 • The wicked will be crushed with iron 6, 7 6 "But the worthless, every one of them will be thrust away like thorns, Because they cannot be taken in hand; 7 But the man who touches them Must be armed with iron and the shaft of a spear, And they will be completely burned with fire in their place. "
• Isaiah 11: 1 -4 Poor & afflicted are rescued & wicked are struck & 1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, slain And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3 And He will delight in the fear of the LORD, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; 4 But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. 5 Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.
Isaiah 11: 10 -12 • Christ the rallying point 10 Then in that day The nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; And His resting place will be glorious. Rom. 15: 12 11 Then it will happen on that day that the Lord Will again recover the second time with His hand The remnant of His people, who will remain, From Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, And from the islands of the sea. 12 And He will lift up a standard for the nations And assemble the banished ones of Israel, And will gather the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth.
Micah 5 • In the latter days of the Christ 15 “And I will execute vengeance in anger and wrath On the nations which have not obeyed. ”
