JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

JESUS • He fulfills the Old Covenant • In His own blood He establishes the New Covenant • Jesus fulfills each aspect of the prophetic hope of a new era of the Holy Spirit’s Work.

Old Testament Prophetic Hope • The Spirit may fall upon all God’s people in power for actions and prophecy. • The Spirit of the Lord will be within the human heart so that we may know God and fulfill His law. • There will be a community that is filled and led by the Spirit. • There will come a Spirit empowered Messiah who will fulfill these hopes and establish the Kingdom of God.

Jesus Christ Brings the New Era of the Holy Spirit • All of these Old Testament promises are first fulfilled in Jesus. • Then, through Jesus, given to us. The Holy Spirit Within Jesus Christ • Jesus Christ conceived by the Holy Spirit. • Luke 1: 35 – “The angel answered [Mary], The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. ”

• Fulfills Ezekiel 36: 26 -27 the Holy Spirit in Him. • “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; And I will put my Spirit in you. ” From conception, Jesus had the Holy Spirit within Him. • The Holy Spirit within Jesus Christ gave Him knowledge of God and the will to follow the Law. • Jesus as a boy showed profound knowledge of God the Father and the law. • Luke 2: 49 -52 – “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house? ”

Fulfills Jeremiah 31: 31 -34 • “… I will make a new covenant… I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. …they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, ” declares the LORD. ”

Jesus did no power ministry UNTIL… • Mark 1: 10 “ As Jesus was …coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. ” Holy Spirit Comes Upon Jesus • Mark 1: 11 “And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. ”

The Holy Spirit Comes Upon Jesus: • Mark 1: 12 “The Spirit immediately drove him out in the wilderness. ” [Overcame Temptations. RSV] • Mark 1: 21 “and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. • Mark 1: 23 “and immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. [Cast out demon] • Mark 1: 29 -30 “As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. ”

The Spirit of God (fell upon, came upon, moved etc. ) [Name of the person] and he or she [Result = empowered action, speaking, seeing]

Jesus has the Spirit upon Him to fulfill the Old Testament positions of prophet, priest and king Jesus as Spirit Empowered Prohpet: Prophet – One whose task it is to speak God’s word to the people. • Preached - Mark 4: 18 -19 • Saw deeply - John 4: 17 -18 • Interpreted the law – Luke 10: 25 -26

Jesus has the Spirit upon Him to fulfill the Old Testament positions of prophet, priest and king Jesus as Spirit Empowered Priest: Priest – Served as mediator between God and the people and he offered sacrifices for the sins of the people. Fulfill Sacrifical System: • Sin Offering – Hebrews 9 [Cross] • Thank Offering – Matthew 26: 26 -28 [Communion] • Heals and Cleanses People – Luke 5: 13 -14 [Leprosy healed] • Intercedes for Us – Luke 22: 41 -44 [Prayer in the Garden] • Forgive Sins – John 8: 1 -11

Jesus has the Spirit upon Him to fulfill the Old Testament positions of prophet, priest and king Jesus as Spirit Empowered King: King – One to whom is entrusted the goverance and protection of the people. • Calls us to Obey and Follow Him – Mark 1: 16 -17 • Routs Satan’s Kingdom – Matthew 12: 28 [Drives out demons] • Authority over Nature – Luke 8: 25 [Calms the storm]

How did Jesus Christ really fulfill these three offices?

How did Jesus Christ really fulfill these three offices? Did the power come from His divinity?

John 14: 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

Jesus did miracles as a human being empowered by the Holy Spirit • Philippians 2: 6 -8 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

How Do We Know the Holy Spirit is the Source? Before the Holy Spirit fell on Jesus at baptism, He did no power ministry. [Luke 1: 35] Jesus acknowledges that He can do nothing by Himself. John 5: 19 – “Jesus gave them this answer, I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. ”

THERE IS A PATTERN OF HOW THE SPIRIT OF GOD WORKS THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE The Spirit of God (fell upon, came upon, moved etc. ) [Name of the person] and he or she [Result = empowered action, speaking, seeing]

The resurrected Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to those whom He has called to follow Him. Through Jesus, in the new covenant, the Holy Spirit is given within us. Jesus Christ Sends the Holy Spirit So that through the Holy Spirit within us and upon us Jesus continues to work among His people as Prophet, Priest and King. We are called to these same three offices just like Jesus, and given the same tools to do it. This is the same Holy Spirit who was “within” and “upon” Jesus Christ.
