Biography: Jeroen van Aeken, also khown as Hieronymus. Bosch or as Jeroen Bosch, was born in Hertogenbosch , a townof the Duchyof Brabant, in 1450. He was a Dutchengraverand painter of the 15 th and 16 th centuries. Very little is known about his life. The lack of documentaryevidenceof his activity outside Hertogenbosh bringintothe mindthat Boschhas always lived in his hometown. It was speculated, thoughwithoutconcreteevidence, that the painterwouldhave belongedto a sect which at the time was devotedto the occult sciences, acquiringa large knowledgeabout dreamsand Alchemy, and that he had deeplydedicatedhimselfto the latter. For this reason, Boschwouldhave beenpersecutedby the Inquisition. Many of his worksdepictscenesof sin and temptation, resortingto the use of complex, symbolic, original, inventiveand caricatural figures, many of themobscureevenin his time. Bosch’sworksdemonstratethat he was a meticulousobserveras well as a fine draughtsmanand colourist. The painterusedtheseskillsto createa fantasticand diabolicalrangeof compositions , where he presents, with a satirical and a moralizingtone, the vices, the sins and fears of religiousorder that plagued the medieval man. An unmistakablestyle that creates complex demoniacfigures: hybridsof insects, reptiles, piecesof humanbeingsand machinery, parts never seen beforein any formof Art. Other worksof the artist deal with moretraditionalthemesas lives of Saints and scenesfromthe birth, the passionand deathof Christ. Hieronymus. Boschdiedin August, 1516.
