Review of Jeremiah 39 -41 • The Babylonians capture Jerusalem, burn it, take all but the poorest captive. (39) • Jeremiah is spared, put in the care of the new governor of Judah, Gedaliah. (39 -40) • Jews from surrounding countries come back, Gedaliah makes offer of peace. (40) • Ishmael assassinates Gedaliah, takes the people of the city captive to Ammon. (41)

V. Johanan’s Deliverance (41: 1118) • Johanan hears of this, sets out to fight Ishmael and rescue the people. (11 -12) • The people see Johanan, rejoice and go to him. Ishmael escapes to Ammon. (13 -15) • The remnant of Jews under Johanan make their way to Egypt. (16 -17) • They fear what the king of Babylon will do in response to Gedaliah’s murder. (18) • Jeremiah may have been in this group of captives, or comes in contact with them as they travel. (see 42: 1 -2)

Jeremiah #37 – Do Not Go to Egypt Jeremiah 42 -43

I. Pray for Us (42: 1 -6) • The leaders of the group come to Jere. , ask him to inquire of God as to what to do. (1 -3) • Jeremiah says that he will pray, and that he will relay the whole message. (4) • Invoking God as witness, they pledge that they will listen and obey, whether the answer is pleasant or not. (5 -6) • Is there anything problematic about this? They had already set out for Egypt! (see 41: 1618)

II. Thus Says the Lord (42: 7 -22) • After 10 days, Jeremiah responds: (7 -9) • Option #1 – “If” you stay here, then God will plant you in peace and security. (10 -12) • Option #2 – “If” you go to Egypt, then the calamity you fear will follow you. (13 -17) • Furthermore, Jeremiah adds: • God promises wrath upon you in Egypt. (18) • He has told you not to go to Egypt (19) • You are deceiving yourselves by asking me to inquire of the Lord. (19 -20) • I told you God’s word, you disobeyed. (21 -22)

III. You’re Lying! (43: 1 -7) • When Jeremiah finishes, Johanan and the others accuse him of lying. (1 -2) • They allege that he is being incited by Baruch to betray them to Babylon. (3) • They take the people—including Jeremiah and Baruch—and enter the land of Egypt, disobeying the word of the Lord. (4 -7)
