King Josiah and sons (Review) • Josiah finds the Book of the Law, prompting him to re-commit Judah to covenant-keeping. • The priests consult with the prophetess, Huldah, who says that Judah is doomed, but not during Josiah’s day. I. Write and Read (36: 1 -10) • 4 th year of Jehoiakim, also the 1 st year of Nebuchadnezzar – 605 BC (1; see 25: 1) • Jeremiah told to write his prophecies so the people might hear and repent. (2 -3) • Baruch writes down, reads the message to the people gathered at the temple. (4 -8) • The reading takes place in the chamber of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan. (9 -10)

II. Run and Hide (36: 11 -19) • Gemariah’s son, Micaiah, hears & reports to the officials in the king’s house. (11 -13) • They send for Baruch, and upon hearing the words read, they are afraid. (14 -16) • They tell Baruch that they will report these words to the king. (16) (Why? ) • They ask Baruch where he got the words, to verify authenticity. (17 -18) • Anticipating the king’s reaction, they tell Baruch (and Jeremiah) to hide. (19)
III. Cut and Burn (36: 20 -26) • Jehoiakim asks to hear the scroll. (20 -21) • As he listens, he cuts up the scroll and throws it into the fire, bit by bit. (22 -23) • Neither the king or his officials rend their garments, contrasting his father: (24) • King Josiah heard the words, tore his clothes, burned the idols. (2 Kings 22: 11; 23: 15) • King Jehoiakim hears the words, tears the scroll, and burns it—his officials pleaded with him not to. (25) • As was predicted, Jehoiakim orders the arrest of Jeremiah and Baruch. (26)
IV. Reply and Rewrite (36: 27 -32) • God tells Jeremiah to re-write the scroll that was burned by Jehoiakim. (27 -28) • The message to Jehoiakim: • • Burned the scroll because it foretold destruction. (29) His line will be cut off from the throne. (30) His dead body will be cast out into the open. (30) He will be punished for sin and stubbornness. (31) • Jeremiah re-writes the words of the scroll along with other similar messages. (32)
