Jeremiah #30 – Peace and Truth Jeremiah 33

I. Great and Mighty Things (33: 1 -13) • Jeremiah’s situation: Still imprisoned (1) • God’s nature: Creator, in control, speaks things beyond our comprehension. (2 -3) • Situation in Jerusalem: Besieged by the Babylonians, ready to destroy them. (4 -5) • God’s message: He will restore their fortunes—healing, peace, forgiveness, joy, reverence, worship—and do good. (6 -13)

II. As the Host of Heaven (33: 14 -26) • Restoration of Israel accomplished by the Branch of David (14 -15, see 23: 5) • The restored people of God will have two things forever: (16 -18) • Leadership of a king • Intercession of a priest Both of these fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah

Jesus, the Son of David I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.

Jesus, the Son of David “As I live, ” declares the LORD, “even though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a signet ring on My right hand, yet I would pull you off… “Thus says the LORD, ‘Write this man down childless, A man who will not prosper in his days; For no man of his descendants will prosper Sitting on the throne of David Or ruling again in Judah. ’” Jeremiah 22: 24, 30

Jesus, the Son of David “Behold, the days are coming, ” declares the LORD, “When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land. “In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, ‘The LORD our righteousness. ’ Jeremiah 23: 5 -6

Jesus, the Son of David “Speak to Zerubbabel governor of Judah, saying, ‘I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the horses and their riders will go down, everyone by the sword of another. ’ ‘On that day, ’ declares the LORD of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant, ’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, ’” declares the LORD of hosts. Jesus, the Son of David After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. Matthew 1: 12 -16

Levitical Priests Forever? But I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who will do according to what is in My heart and in My soul; and I will build him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed always. 1 Samuel 2: 25

Levitical Priests Forever? ‘Their leader shall be one of them, And their ruler shall come forth from their midst; And I will bring him near and he shall approach Me; For who would dare to risk his life to approach Me? ’ declares the LORD. Jeremiah 30: 21

Levitical Priests Forever? Then they shall bring all your brethren from all the nations as a grain offering to the LORD, on horses, in chariots, in litters, on mules and on camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem, ” says the LORD, “just as the sons of Israel bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD. I will also take some of them for priests and for Levites, ” says the LORD. Isaiah 66: 20 -21

Levitical Priests Forever? Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron? For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also. For the one concerning whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.

Levitical Priests Forever? But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. 1 Peter 2: 9 -10

(19 -26) • As certain as His covenant with the sun and moon. • As certain as the innumerable nature of the stars. • More certain than the doubts of a despairing people. • As certain as the fixed patterns of the earth. • This restoration is the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham and David.
