Jenni’s Life Dolores Janney “Jenni “ Rivera Born: July 02, 1969 in Long Beach, California Her parents were undocumented immigrants from Mexico Her parents raised Jenni, her sisters and her four brothers in a tight-knit, musical household; her brother Lupillo is also a regional Mexican Musician. Jenni became pregnant at age 15 with the first of her five children. She supported the two of them by selling CD’s at flea markets, while working toward her GED at a continuation school and graduating as class valedictorian. Jenni’s Life cont. Her family introduced her to traditional Mexican music, including the genres of banda, norteña, and ranchera. Her father was a bartender and businessman who created the record label Cintas Acuario in 1987, which launched the career of Mexican singer and songwriter Chalino Sánchez. Jenni died in a plane crash with 6 others after performing a concert in Monterrey, Mexico on December 08, 2012. In life and death, several media outlets including CNN, Billboard, Fox News, and The New York Times have labeled her as the most important female figure and top selling female artist in the regional Mexican music genre
Career Jenni’s specialty was banda, also known as corrido, she was well aware of other Mexican styles, such as norteño, tejano, mariachi, and ranchero; in fact, the Mexican-American singer recorded norteño versions of some songs, but banda/corrido was her main focus. She was significant as one of the few female artists in the often male-dominated genre. She sang in both Spanish and English and often addressed personal themes such as her struggles with domestic violence, divorce, and her weight. Rivera described speaking openly with her fans about her personal issues as a "primary part" of her career. Jenni made her first recording in 1992 as a fathers day present to her father; she made more recordings and signed to Capitol/EMI. First album, Chacalosa (slang for “party girl”) was released in 1995. In 1999 Jenni wrote "Las Malandrinas" to pay homage to her female fans. She also said, "The song blew up. People became interested. That's when Jenni Rivera the artist was actually born. “ "It was the late 1990 s and the early 2000 s and the female singers were singing ballads and romantic fare. So I figured, I'm not typical at all in any way, so I'm going to do what the guys do but in a different voice. Awards, Two Billboard Music Awards, twentytwo Billboard Latin Music Awards, Eleven Billboard Mexican Music Awards, and eighteen Lo Nuestro Awards. She has a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars. Jenny Rivera Love Foundation helps single mothers who have suffered poverty, addiction, disease, domestic violence, addiction, and sexual abuse. In June 2008, Univision reported that Jenni was arrested after a concert for allegedly hitting a fan. In October 2008, a sex video featuring Jenni began circulating. In May 2009, Jenni was arrested by customs in Mexico City. She failed to declare $52, 467 cash in her purse. She paid a fine of $8, 400 and was released.
