Biography: Jean Francois Raffaelli was born in Paris on April 20, 1850. He was a French realist painter, sculptor and printmaker, who exhibited with the Impressionists. He was also an actor and writer. Raffaëlli showed an interest in music and theater before becoming a painter in 1870. One of his landscape work was accepted to be exhibited at the “Salon” in the same year. In October 1871, he studied about three months with Jean-Léon Gérôme at the “École des Beaux-Arts” in Paris, since he had no other formal training. Earlier in his career, the work of Raffaëlli tended towards realism, portraying mostly workers, peasants and scavengers, as they are seen in the Parisian suburbs. He was considered a supporter of the urban poor and, until 1890, his works exhibited an uncompromisingsocial realism quite unique for the time. In 1877 he met Edgar Degas, who invited him to join the Impressionist exhibitions of 1880 and 1881, a move that was criticized by painters such as Monet, since Raffaëlli was not an Impressionist, and dominated the 1880 exhibition with his outsized display of 37 works. Raffaëlli received an honorable mention in the “Salon” in 1885 and a gold medal in the “Exposition Universelle” of 1889. That same year he became “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur”. The importance of Raffaëlli Art in the nineteenth century comes from his unique work of the suburban landscape of Paris and its inhabitants. Unlike most other artists of the time, Raffaëlli observed the effect of change in urban landscapesand the reflection that it had on people's lives. With original figures, Raffaëlli was the illustrator of the book perhaps more severely limited printed of all time: an edition of just three copies of “Germinie Lacreteux” published by the Goncourt brothers. Raffaëlli made a series of sculptures, but these are currently known only through photographs. He died in Paris on February 11, 1924. His works are in many important collections in the world.
