JCB STEM Ambassador Project JCB pioneered the Telescopic
JCB STEM Ambassador Project
• JCB pioneered the Telescopic Handler with the JCB 520 released in 1977 • Worlds number 1 • Currently produce a range of 30+ models ranging from 4 -20 m reach, up to 6 tonne capacity • Specialised machines produced for construction, agriculture, waste management & energy production

Mentor Input • JCB Mentors have 3 visits across the project. • Mentor Objectives are; • To help teachers deliver the project across the 10 weeks. • To provide engineering knowledge for the students and advice on other aspects of the project. • To help support and encourage the students as they build the models.
Basic Design Concept • The main areas of the model: Syringes – Boom raising Outer boom section Inner boom section Lead screw – Rotation results in boom extension Custom Attachment to fit end of boom. Base
Skills Developed by Project Students will gain; • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems. • Ability to translate design ideas into a working prototype. • Time management skills – Gantt Charts and assigning Team Roles. • Teamwork skills – working in small mixed groups to achieve a goal. • Presentation skills – Details of their project in a presentation to all the other teams at The Final.
10 Week Time Plan • Week 1 – Launch project, form teams and assign roles • Week 2 -6 – Base Model, Engineering Theory • Building the base model. • Understanding the Engineering theory behind the model • Creating material useful to include in Final Presentation.
10 Week Time Plan • Week 7 -10 – Design, Build, Testing and Presentations • Testing base model – most efficient method and why. • Design & Build of unique attachment • Presentation creation and preparation for The Final. • The Final • Competition between all teams • Teams win prizes from several categories
