JASMINE BECKET-GRIFFITH
v Jasmine Becket-Griffith is a freelance artist. Her signature style is fantasy, namely fairies, dragons, mermaids, as well as over all gothic artwork. She prefers to work with acrylic paint on canvas or wood and her designs are seen on her own merchandise, mainly through Hot Topic and collectibles through the Bradford Group. This includes co-branded Disney works. She is also a lead figure in fantasy conventions (Dragon*Con, Mega. Con -Orland Faerie. Con).
Jasmine began doing freelance in 2006. She co-branded artwork with the Walt Disney Company as an independent contracter. Much of her works shared with Disney take on the original aspect of the character, only with perhaps a darker tone. In this image we see a rather bored looking Alice, from the Disney film Alice in Wonderland, sitting across from a fiery carnage while strange creature stand aside her. This obviously has a different tone from the original Disney film.
Much of her work has an almost surreal aspect to it. Many times she uses body parts, most commonly facial features, to express abnormality in her piece. In this piece, we see a mouth on her hand covering her real mouth. With runny eyes and an upturned shape of her “eyebrows”, this piece could refer to “the smile that hides pain”.
Many of her works involve animals. While her range is diverse, she uses animal motifs of cats, dragons, and wolves. While the focal figure is commonly with the animal, often times she has the focal figure reflect the animal.
Becket-Griffith has a large collection dedicated to mermaids. She has a wide range of styles used for this gallery. While many mermaid themed works are set in either deep sea or shore line areas, Becket-Griffith has settings of places like the ocean surface, sewer lines, and ponds. Many times surrounded by fish, the mermaid commonly blend in with the background.
Lastly one of the most well known pieces: Faeries. Becket. Griffith is commonly known for her works of faeries. She gets inspiration for them in many ways. Some of them are in natural settings and other times from common things like teacups or alley ways.
Jasmine Beckett-Griffith is an amazing artist and she is possibly my favorite. I knew of her art before and I find her style beautiful. She sets the proportion off balance and it looks stunning, in my opinion. I like how her work is central around fantasy and natural figures, and her cross-overs of nature and modern day is very creative. I aspire to be as good an artist as she is and perhaps see her work in person, rather that images from the internet. I find her stylistic choices and themes very original and creative. She is flexible between realistic and non-realistic, and I admire that about her skills.
