Japanese dreams of an Empire • Japan was a growing power looking to expand its empire • 1931 -Took over Manchuria in Northeast China • Tried to take all of China but struggled. Saw European colonies in Asia as another option
Japan as an Axis Power • November 1936 - Japan forms an alliance with Germany amd Italy • 1941 -Japan conquers French Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos) • US President Franklin Roosevelt fears American colonies could be next • July 1941 -Roosevelt cuts off all US oil shipments to Japan
Attack at Pearl Harbor • Japan wants to catch US and European powers by surprise. • Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto called for attack on US naval fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii • December 7, 1941 - Japan attacks!
“A day that will live in infamy”
Pearl Harbor continued • Aftermath of attack: -19 American ships sunk -2, 300 Americans killed -1, 100 wounded • American public had been divided about entering the war. Now, shocked and ready to fight! • Congress quickly declares war on Japan and its allies (Germany and Italy)
Japanese Victories • Dec. 1941 - Guam, Wake Island (US controlled territories) conquered • 1942 - Thailand, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dutch East Indies and Burma all fall
Japanese Cruelty • The people of their new colonies often treated with cruelty from Japan • Allied prisoners of war treated most harshly • Bataan Death March in the Philippines- forced march of over 50 miles. 70, 000 started, 54, 000 survived
Allies Strike Back • April 1942 - American troops led by James Doolittle bomb Tokyo • May- Battle of the Coral Sea- Allies stop Japan’s advance southward, although many lives lost on both sides • June- Battle of Midway Island, huge victory for Allies, turning the tide of the war
Allies on Offense • America General Douglas Mac. Arthur comes up with a plan of “island hopping” with the ultimate goal of attacking mainland Japan • August 1942 -February 1943: Battle of Guadalcanal. Bloody six months of fighting ends with an Allied victory
