History of writing system ・ 5, 500 years ago cuneiform (楔形文字) ← Mesopotamia, Sumerians ・ 5, 000 years ago hieroglyphs (象形文字) ← Nile basin, Ancient Egyptians ➡ Not used now
The only ancient characters that are also used in modern times ➡ Kanji (漢字) ・Bone characters (甲骨文字) ← The oldest Kanji artifact ・Kinbun (金文) ← ≒ Inscription(銘文), The second oldest Kanji artifact

The development of Kanji & Kana script • Kanji • logographs, pictographs (象形文字) ↑ imitating a shape
・shiji characters or ideographs (指事文字) ↑ in the narrow sense ・non-phonetic compounds kaii (会意文字) ↑ combining meanings
・phonetic compounds, keisei (形声文字) ↑ shape and sound ➡More than 80% of Kanji is this kind
• Kana: hiragana(ひらがな) → Syllabet (often a consonant followed by a vowel

lerning calligraphy in school We practiced calligraphy with a pencil until the second grade of elementary school. When in the third grade, we use a brush. Characters written in calligraphy are often displayed in the classroom.
In conclusion ・Kanji are adopted Chinese characters. ・Hiragana are used primary for native or naturalized Japanese words. ・Katakana are used primary foreign words, names and loan words.
