Writing Systems Writing systems can be divided into two main types: those that represent consonants and vowels (alphabets), those which represent syllables (syllabaries), though some do both. THINK! Which style or system does ENGLISH have? Do we use an Alphabet or Syllable characters?
The Japanese Writing System ★ It is a SYLLABARY system. This means that writing system is based off of clusters of sounds. Example: There is no K+a= Ka. It is simply Ka. ENGLISH = K + i + t + e = Kite Japanese= O + Ka + Ne = Okane (Money)
The Japanese Writing Systems ★ There are THREE main Japanese writing systems and ONE foreigners to learn. 1. Hiragana 2. Katakana 3. Kanji The learning system is called Romaji. Using the Roman alphabet to write the language.
Kanji ❖ Made of Chinese characters. ❖ Uses pictures to create characters ❖ Long ago, the Chinese invaded Japan and had used this writing system, later Hiragana replaced the major use of Kanji. ❖ More than 10, 000 characters ★
Hiragana ❖ Originally made for women since women weren’t allowed to read or write. ❖ Most common writing system. ❖ Appears more curvy in appearance. ❖ 46 characters in total ❖ First system learned in school. ★
★ Katakana ❖ Made foreign words that do not have a Japanese name. ❖ Same sounds as Hiragana. ❖ 46 Characters. ❖ More sharp and pointy ❖ Used for Onomatopoeia words. English = Butter Japanese = Bataa バター
Roomaji ❖ Created for Foreigners. ❖ Uses ENGLISH or ROMAN letters ❖ Not used commonly in Japan. ★
