Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami
The Earthquake and Tsunami • In 2011 a scale 9 earthquake happened at the shore of Japan • The earthquake lasted about 8 minutes long and caused a lot of damage to Japan • Due to Japan having an earthquake warning many life's were saved by stopping all trains and anything other working lines • The earthquake was so strong that it caused a tsunami reaching over 40 metres high • The tsunami destroyed everything in its path, sweeping up cars , railways and destroying almost every house it touched for 230 miles
Death Toll • Almost 16000 people died due to both the earthquake and tsunami • 6, 152 people were injured • 2, 572 people were not found after the tsunami ended • 228, 000 people lost their homes due to them being destroyed
Damage • The earthquake and tsunami cause major damage to north-eastern Japan with roads and railways being heavily damaged • Many houses got burned down and Japans dam got destroyed causing many water problems all over Japan • Most houses in Japan were left without water and others were completely destroyed
Nuclear Meltdown • The tsunami caused 3 reactors to meltdown • The reactors built up so much hydrogen that all 3 blew up • People within the radius of the explosion all had to be taken out and brought to safety • No one died to the reactors blowing up
Economic Impact • It took months for the meltdown to be fixed resulting in tons of radiation being released and things damaged Japans water and food supply • It cost Japan 360 billion to cover all the cost • Japan had to import oil as there supply got whipped out • Two nuclear plants reopened in 2015 to make up for the ones lost during the tsunami • Japan struggled badly with re-building its economy and their import costs increased
Economic Impact • It slowed down global growth • The tsunami closed major ports and shut down many airports • Shops and major company's had to shut down or were not allowed to build • Car companies were not allowed to build any cars or sell any cars • This caused a lot of them to move to new areas causing Japan to struggle even more with re-building
