January Monthly Locust Grove Elementary 3 rd grade Reading Teacher’s Message Happy New Year! We have finish half of the school year. We look forward to a new year and to continue to learn. We are starting several new units this semester. Please remember that class will start at 7: 45 and lunch/recess ends at 11: 00. We need students on the entire class day so they can learn with us. We appreciate all that you do to support us this year. Mark Your Calendars! *Jan. 11 th – Students return to school *Jan. 13 th – Title I Lunch and Learn Jan. 18 th – No school MLK holiday Jan. 29 th – Teacher Workday (No School) In Reading, students will focus on being able to describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect. We will also focus on how to use text features and search tools to locate information relevant to a given topic quickly and efficiently. Students will be able to describe the logical connection between particular sentences and paragraphs in a text. Our focus strategy for this month is self-monitoring for understanding. We want to ensure that our students understand that good readers monitor themselves as they read. Please continue to encourage your student to read for about 20 minutes each night. LGE is working hard this year to ensure that students are excited about reading! Writing We will start our opinion writing unit. Students will begin picking a side of a situation and produce a pieces of writing persuading the reader of their thoughts. We will also focus on ensuring that students are producing their best quality writing! Math Students will start looking at the attributes of shapes. We will look at how different categories of shapes have the same attributes. We will also move into partitioning shapes into fractions. Please continue to work on fact fluency with your students at home (Dollar Tree has great flash cards). Science/Social Studies In Science, students will began to learn about soil. We will dive into the properties of the three different types of soil (loam, clay, and sand). We will plan and carry out an investigation on soil and the different properties. In Social Studies, students will began to study the British Colonial America. We will look into the economics and religious reasons for colonizing each settlement.
