January 2008 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -08/0121 r 0 Intent & rationale for the proposed scope • A multi-user BSS peak aggregated throughput of at least 1 Gbps – Introduces a sum rate criterion instead of the individual link performance indicator to capture the multi-user space – Introduces simultaneous conversations support (being P 2 P or not) • Robust and flexible bandwidth management: native support for multiple bandwidth operation – It is important for coverage sake to be able to trade bandwidth for range from a link budget standpoint – Might be wise to introduce this right at the start and avoid the 11 n coexistence difficulties • Add outdoor compatible delay spread resistance – Wi-Fi is already operating outdoor (Hotspots, 4. 9 GHz) – Coincides with VHT environment of interest highlighted by WFA • Below 6 GHz carrier frequency operation and – Land of the IMT. Advanced sprectrum – Backward compatibility with legacy IEEE 802. 11 a devices in the 5. 2 GHz unlicensed band – Hooks for interworking with IMT-Advanced technologies in the licensed spectrum • This is captured as a requirement in WP 5 C IMT.
