Mission Janseva Mandal Empowerment of the weak, marginalized, exploited and the vulnerable irrespective of caste or creed with a preferential option for the weak tribals Jeevan Vidya Striving for empowerment of tribal women through leadership development, financial self-sufficiency and capacity building.
History Janseva Mandal q Started in 1969 by Bernard Massat a Spanish gentleman for the upliftment of the tribal population q Part of the Jesuit organization Bombay Xavierant Corp. q Had boarding facilities in Shirpur, Khandesh, Manor and Thalassari q Boarding in Nandurbar has been around for the past 15 years Jeevan Vidya q Earlier operated under Janseva Mandal q For past 10 years autonomously managed by Jeevan Vidya Trust
Location • District town of Nandurbar, Maharashtra • Near Maharashtra-Gujarat border • Approx. 3 hrs from Surat or Nasik
Organization Structure Janseva Mandal Educational Coordinator: Fr. Jeevan Mendonsa Director: Fr. Adolf Campus superintendent, Nitesh and two cooks Coordinator, director & treasurer are on the payroll of the parent organization q Volunteers help as and when needed q q Jeevan Vidya q q q Director and Superintendent: Ms. Martina Fargose Assistant superintendent: Ms. Nisha Accountant: Azhar Shaikh Two cooks Volunteers help as and when needed
Activities q Provide boarding and lodging facilities for Adivasi children (60 boys and 90 girls) q Curricular q Additional tutoring for Maths, Science and English q Teaching to speak, read and write Marathi q Extra-curricular q q q q Cooking Computer training Using sewing machines Cycling, outdoor and indoor games Gardening and composting Personality development sessions Clay modeling q Medical checkup camps q Parent meetings
Operation q Do not have a formal process to “qualify” students for admissions q Parents normally pay Rs. 3000 per year for the facilities q Students are between 5 th and 12 th grade and stay around 40 -50 kms away from the schools q The school is a 15 min walk from the boarding facility q Students have to follow a set schedule which gives them time for studies and play
Asha, Seattle Involvement q With Asha Seattle since Oct 2008 q Asha provides for the operating expenses to run the boarding facility for about 120 children q Last year Asha contributed Rs. 11, 000 for both organizations q Rs. 5, 50, 000 per organization q Rs. 611 per child per month (for 150 children) q Funds were transferred on a half yearly basis till 2011, then we switched to a yearly basis in 2012
