Jane Addams
Jane Addams • This woman was horrified by the living conditions the new immigrants to America had to suffer, so in 1889, she turned a run-down house in the middle of Chicago into the Hull House; a place to help new Americans find a job, opened a day care/ kindergarten, ran English classes, exposed the poor to art, adjust to life in the United States, and much more.
Jane Addams devoted her life to helping the new immigrants and the underprivileged.
The Hull Mansion pictured here is the sole remaining building at the location of the original Hull-House. The rest were demolished to make way for the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois.
Safe and open outdoor spaces were created for children.
