EARLY LIFE/EDUCATION • Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois September 6, 1860 • Her parents were John H. Addams and Sarah Weber Addams • She attended Rockford University in Illinois and graduated in 1881 • Jane attended the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania from 1881 -1882. • She had health problems at an early age • She had one sibling named Alice
WHAT JANE DID AND WHY SHE DID IT • Jane and her friend Ellen Gates Starr opened Hull House in Chicago, 1889 because they went on a working trip and they saw that helping the poor is important. • Jane Addams won the Nobel Peace Prize because she was being admitted to a Baltimore hospital on the very day • The settlement house movement in America was spread by Jane Addams because she wanted to help women and children that had no jobs or homes. • Jane Addams co-founded one of the first settlements in the United States.

INTERESTING FACTS • Jane Addams rejected the idea of getting married and having children in order to spend her life working for social reform, peace, and settlement work. • On May 21 st, 1935 Jane Addams died in Chicago, at the age of 74. • Jane Addams was one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). • Jane Addams eventually grew Hull House to 13 buildings.
