Jan van der Heyden, pintor, desenhista, gravadore engenheiro, nasceu em Gorinchem , Holanda, em 5 de marçode 1637. Foi um dos primeiros pintoresholandesesa se especializarem paisagensurbanase se tornou um dos principais pintores arquitetônicos Dutch da “ Golden. Age”. Ele se casou com Sara ter Hiel de Utrecht em 26 de junhode 1661 em Amsterdam. A obra de Van der Heyden é compostaem grandeparte por paisagens urbanas e outras representaçõesde grupos de edifícios, embora ele tenha pintado cerca de quarenta paisagens puras. Algumas de suas obras são representaçõesrelativamentefiéis de uma localizaçãoreal, mas muitas outras são fantasias arquitetônicas inteiramente imaginárias. As cenas de Van der Heyden são geralmentebanhadas por uma luz brilhantee quase natural. A habilidadedo pintor em distribuiráreas de luz e sombra e seu domíniode efeitos atmosféricossutis contribui para o senso de coerênciae unidadede suas obras. O artista pintousua obra-primade still life, “Room Cornerwith Curiosities”, aos setenta e cinco anos de idade.

Embora sua produçãoartística tenha sido considerável, a maioria dos registros documentaisda sua vida se refere a atividades em campos totalmente alheios às artes. Um esquema abrangente de iluminação pública para Amsterdam, que foi projetado e implementadopor ele, permaneceuem operaçãode 1669 a 1840 e foi adotadocomomodelopor muitas outras cidades e no exterior. Jan van der Heyden também fez contribuiçõessignificativas para a tecnologia contemporâneade combate a incêndios e, com seu irmão Nicolaes, dedicoumuito tempoentre 1668 e 1671 para inventarum novo e bem-sucedidomecanismo de bombeamentode água. Reorganizoua brigada de bombeiros voluntária em 1685 e escreveu e ilustrou o primeiro manual de combate a incêndio “Descriptionof the recently inventedand patentedhose fire engines”, em 1690.
