Jamestown was founded on May 13, 1607.
One hundred and four men and boys would remain to establish the first permanent English settlement in North America.

Religion • The settlers were members of the Anglican Church, the official Church of England. • They were expected to attend one out of every four Sunday services.
John Rolfe is credited with saving the Virginia colony when he combined local tobacco tending methods with Trinidad tobacco, which was sweeter than the local variety. In 1614 the first Virginia tobacco sold on the London market, and within 100 years plantation farming covered the Chesapeake region.
". . . there are twelve houses and stores built in the Towne, one of brick by the Secretary, the fairest that ever was knowen in this countrye. . . " Governor Sir John Harvey (1638).
The First Thanksgiving On December 14, 1619 settlers steeped ashore at Berkeley Hundred along the James River and, in accordance with the proprietor’s instruction that “the day of our ship’s arrival. . . Shall be yearly and perpetually kept as a day of thanksgiving, ” celebrated the first official Thanksgiving day.
Government • In 1619 the first representative legislative assembly met at the Church in Jamestown • Burgesses to the House of Burgesses represented the colony’s towns and plantations • This is the birthplace of the American heritage of representative government

In 1619: Six Notable Events • First meeting of the House of Burgesses • First documented arrival of Africans • Arrangements for marriageable women to immigrate to Virginia. They arrive in 1620. • First successful labor strike (for English rights) • First land made available for private ownership • First Thanksgiving Day observed
