John Rolfe is credited with saving the Virginia colony when he combined local tobacco

John Rolfe is credited with saving the Virginia colony when he combined local tobacco tending methods with Trinidad tobacco, which was sweeter than the local variety. In 1614 the first Virginia tobacco sold on the London market, and within 100 years plantation farming covered the Chesapeake region.
