Jacob Moves His Family to Egypt (Genesis 46: 1 -27) • Israel begins his journey to Egypt – Stops in Beersheba – Offers sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac • God speaks to Israel in visions of the night – – – – “Jacob, Jacob” I am God, the God of your father Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt There, I will make you into a great nation I myself will go down with you to Egypt I will also bring you up again Joseph's hand shall close your eyes • 70 persons of the house of Jacob come to Egypt
A Touching Reunion (Genesis 46: 28 -34) Jacob sends Judah ahead of him to Joseph to show the way before him in Goshen • Joseph presents himself to Jacob, falls on his neck and weeps … a good while • Israel says to Joseph, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive. ” Joseph preps Jacob and his brothers for their meeting with Pharaoh
The King and the Patriarch (Genesis 47: 1 -12) Joseph preps Pharaoh to meet his family and presents them to Pharaoh • Pharaoh gives them Goshen … the best of the land • Jacob blesses Pharaoh • Pharaoh and Jacob converse (vv. 7 -10) • Joseph settles his father and his brothers in Goshen … and provides them with food, according to the number of their dependents
Jacob Blesses His Progeny (Genesis 47: 27 -49: 27) Jacob lives in Egypt seventeen years and is now 147 y/o …. They are fruitful and have multiplied greatly! Israel makes Joseph promise not to bury him in Egypt, but to “let him lie with his fathers” • Jacob blesses Joseph’s sons (Gen 48) – Manasseh – Ephraim (vv. 1 -11) • Jacob blesses his sons (Gen 49) – – Reuben (vv. 3 -4) Simeon and Levi (vv. 5 -7) Judah (vv. 8 -12) Joseph (vv. 22 -26) By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. (Hebrews 11: 21)
The Deaths of Jacob and Joseph (Genesis 49: 28 -50: 26) • Jacob gives final burial instructions … and dies … he is embalmed, mourned 70 days … and carried back to Canaan for burial • • The brothers are afraid, but Joseph reassures them (50: 15 -21) Joseph reminds his brothers of the covenant promise and gives instructions regarding his bones (50: 24 -25) • Joseph dies at the age of 110 (Heb 11: 22) The people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly. They multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them. And there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
