Sun image: “L’état c’est moi. ” Socialist-realist leader, "positive hero" who unites Russia, crushes kramola (dissent). n n n Transparent references to contemporary issues in Russia: repelling invaders (war with 3 rd Reich); Ivan's war with the boyars compares to Stalin's suppression of rivals (Trotsky and co. ); alliance with England - trading with Russia through the White Sea (convoys bringing war materiel to USSR).

Literature: Aleksandr Pushkin Details borrowed from Pushkin’s historical play Boris Godunov (1825): n Holy Fool, Nikolka the Iron Cap; n satirical portraits of Poles and other foreigners. n Text mimicks old Russian speech, like Pushkin's.

Opera: Musorgsky Modest Musorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov (1868 -1873) inspired sets and costumes. Musorgsky’s music paved the way for the Russian tradition in music. Eisenstein produced Wagner’s Valkyrie at the Bolshoi (1940).
