IU 13 First Annual MATH 24 Tournament Thursday, April 23, 2009

14 public schools and 6 private schools brought students to the first ever IU 13 MATH 24 Tournament

Students arrived at 8: 30 a. m. ready for some mental math FUN. .

Students sat at tables of four, teachers served as proctors.

Over 125 4 th and 5 th grade students participated in the tournament.

Comments from teachers: • Though my students did not do as well as they hoped, they had a fabulous time and are motivated to work harder for next year. • Thank you for reviving the live 24 Tournament, it is more meaningful to students than the online version. ” • There was so much excitement in the room and the kids really had a fun time.

This year’s tournament was for 4 th and 5 th graders. Next year the tournament will expand to include 4 th through 8 th graders and take place on two different days.

Object of MATH 24 • Using the four numbers given, add, subtract, multiply, and/or divide to get 24. • Single digit cards like the one shown here. • Cards are in three levels, this is a level 2 card.

Participating nonpublic schools: Lancaster Christian, Lebanon Catholic Linville Mennonite, OMPH, Resurrection Catholic, Sacred Heart

Comments from teachers: • Is there something in the water in Cocalico? Those kids were AMAZING. • I was very happy to be part of the day and have some ideas brewing in my head to excite the staff and students in my schools with MATH 24. • Thank you for running a seamless competition for our children to enjoy and showcase their diligence. We are already thinking about next year.

Each student received a t-shirt for participating in the tournament. The lesson we learned for next year, remove the rubber band from the t-shirt before giving it to the students – rubber band wars.

Very heavy trophy… nah, it’s just plastic. The top finalist won this trophy. The top 8 finalists won a medal.

Comment from a teacher: I think the tournament was a great success. The prizes were right on. The organization of rounds was terrific. The table winners were thrilled with their stickers. Our students had a great time and so did the proctors.

Comment from a teacher: Thanks for taking on the event, it was missing and the math students do need recognition.

Comments from teachers: • I thought the event went extremely well. As a matter of fact, it really opened my eyes to a whole new world of math. I am going to start a math club for my school next year because of this experience.

Teaching training sessions will be held Fall 2009. The trainings will focus on the proper rules of the tournament and how to plan a school-wide tournament.
