Edward W. Beasley Academic Center was founded in 1978 § Magnet School of approximately 1, 400 Pre. K-8 th grade students; Approximately 1, 250 K-8 th and 145 Pre-K 3 and 4 year old students. § ONLY 20% of our students are in the Regional Academic Center (Gifted); and 80% are in Regular General Ed. and that includes Diverse Learners (LRE). RAC provides accelerated instructional program that places an emphasis on thinking, reasoning, problem solving and creativity. In addition, it includes French, Spanish or Latin, laboratory science, computer science and fine arts. However, we give the highlighted to every student. § RAC students must first demonstrate an intelligence score of *115 or higher from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and there is a lottery. § *OUR Lottery gives first preference to siblings and then proximity (neighborhood) students (i. e. 40% of 112 Kindergarten students = 45 students every school year). Students who live within a 1. 5 mile radius of the elementary magnet school (Proximity Lottery). § All students in our Child Parent Center (CPC) for Pre-School come from the neighborhood if they apply; no lottery. *Preschool students do not automatically matriculate into kindergarten. Students must re-apply again to get into Kindergarten through the Selective Enrollment Process at CPS Office of Academic Enhancement (OAE). Beasley’s Academic Programming 2

Bus Transportation Procedures § The CPS Dept. of Transportation organizes the bus times, bus vendors and pick up/drop off locations. You should receive it in the mail from the CPS Dept. of Transportation. Contact (773) 553 -2860 for more information. § Beasley submits your applications for processing to the CPS Dept. of Transportation. § Mr. Guy Gray in the Main Office may assist you with your bus applications. During the first few weeks of school he will be located in the library to assist you. § Would recommend alternative transportation first few weeks of school. 8

Parent Volunteer Policies § Effective Parent Volunteering means positive service in school i. e. school beautification activities, lunch/recess support, arrival/dismissal for Safe Passage, field trip chaperons, and leading extracurricular activities i. e. Girl Scouts/ Boy Scouts. § Our parental organization is the Parent Advisory Council (PAC). Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month at 9: 00 a. m. in the Library. Local School Council (financial/CIWP) are the same day but at 6: 00 p. m. in the Auditorium. § Parent volunteers are at the principal’s discretion. Must be Board approved w/background checks. § Volunteering in the classroom is at teacher/principal discretion and should not exceed 3 hours a day nor 3 days a week. Beasley Student Uniform Policy § www. beasleyac. org under the News Section § Hunter green bottoms; yellow, white, or hunter green polo shirts, hunter green, white cardigan or vest, and all-black shoes. § Lack of compliance will result in students not being able to participate in non-educational extra-curricular activities and sports teams. § STLS qualify for support in student uniforms. 11

Student Discipline/Social Emotional Learning (SEL) § Beasley adheres to the policies that are outlined in the CPS Student Code of Conduct (SCC). § Students are to adhere to our Beasley Bottom Line Framework and Beasley Core Values. § Cell phones are not to be seen nor heard in school. § Bullying, cyber-bullying or harassment of any kind is not permitted. § The Laynie Foundation and Bright Star are our community partners to assist students’/parents’ emotional wellness. § We use Second Step Curriculum and conduct Morning Meetings to assist students in their SEL development.
