Growing Knowledge in Data Kindergarten Categorize objects, compare and contrast objects with similar attributes, and describe measurable characteristics. Second Measure objects using tools, estimate lengths, show work on line plot and bar graphs, and solve addition and subtraction problems First Compare lengths of up to three different objects and tell time Third Create correctly labeled scaled graphs, show data with line graphs, using whole numbers and fractions. Fourth Solve word problems to convert different systems of measurements, as well as, larger units to smaller units, such as a foot to an inch. Fifth Utilize conversions for multistep, real world problems, understand concepts of volume, and use line plots to display data.
Kindergarten Students are able to describe measurable data such as weight and length. They are also able to compare two objects that have similar attributes. Students are able to take crayons, for example, and draw them from tallest to shortest. Math Standards: ● ● ● CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. K. MD. A. 1 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. K. MD. A. 2 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. K. MD. B. 3
Tools & Strategies ● Help students understand weight as described as heavy or light ● Measuring various items in the classroom, shortest to tallest ● Using boxes of pencils to describe longest to shortest
1 st Grade Students are able to order three objects by length, using one of those objects to measure. They are able to express the length of an object by a whole number. Students are also able to tell and write time in hours and half-hours with analog and digital clocks. They are able to answer questions like, “which has fewer? ” As well as draw graphs. Math Standards: ● ● CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 1. MD. A. 1 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 1. MD. A. 2 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 1. MD. B. 3 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 1. MD. C. 4
Tools & Strategies ● Students are able to identify indirect measurements. Is the cow taller or shorter than the three blocks? ● Students can express length in a whole number. ● Students work at identifying the hour and half hour
2 nd Grade Students are able to measure with tools such as rulers and measuring tapes. Students are able to estimate lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They are able to solve problems involving money from dollars to pennies and draw picture graphs and bar graphs to represent up to four categories. Math Standards: ● ● CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 2. MD. A. 1 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 2. MD. A. 2 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 1. MD. B. 3 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 1. MD. C. 4
Tools & Strategies ● ● Measuring tape, rulers and measuring cups Toy money, coins and dollars Making piggy banks, classroom penny drives and cash registers Treasurers and classroom accounts
3 rd Grade ● ● Students are able to draw scaled graphs to represent data with several different categories. They are also able to make line plots, using differents units, such as, whole numbers, halves, or quarters. Math Standards: ● ● ● CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 3. MD. A. 1 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 3. MD. B. 3 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 3. MD. B. 4
Tools & Strategies ● Design and Conduct Survey ● Label charts and graphs with appropriate symbols ● Use graphic organizers to collect data *Strategy - To engage all students, use a class project to collect data
4 th Grade Students solve word problems using common objects requiring conversion of measurements, such as pounds and ounces. Students can add and subtract fractions by applying their knowledge of line plots. Math Standards: ● ● CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 4. MD. A. 2 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 4. MD. B. 4
Tools & Strategies ● Demonstrate different methods to organize data ● Discuss the relationship of the question and the data ● Interpret the information from the data *Strategy - Use manipulatives to help students visualize the data
5 th Grade Students should be able to: ● Convert similar measurement units (ex. 5 cm=. 05 m) ● Geometry: begin understanding volume ● Represent and interpret data by graphing on line plots CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 5. MD. A. 1 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 5. MD. B. 2 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 5. MD. C. 3 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 5. MD. C. 5 CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 5. MD. C. 4
Tools & Strategies ● Liquid Beakers for measurement ● Object representing cubes, sugar cubes, or small blocks ● Geometric shape building kit
