Common Core Curriculum Standards Nearly every state is transitioning to the Common Core Curriculum Standards. Utah’s transition was fully implemented last year, but refinements are still in process. Please keep the following in mind: • We support the ideas of the core, but we acknowledge that it is an ideal that will take time, effort, and patience. • The transition requires some changes in expectations. • There will be some growing pains as adjustments are made.

• The overall emphasis of the Common Core slows progression slightly, integrates topics, emphasizes mathematical thinking, and increases the depth of study. • Unlike most math departments, we have the challenge of blending students from different schools and districts into one cohesive program. • Students are most successful in math (especially college math) if they have the solid foundational skills. • Our overall goal is for students to be ready for college level work. • We will challenge and advance students as fast as we can without working beyond their capability. • Final placement is determined by the Accuplacer Diagnostic score, previous courses and grades, as well as individual consultations.

“Math Paths” Information about placement can be found on the pink paper in your packet. There is some flexibility in the paths and in placement, but we have a great deal of experience and expertise in assessing student performance and we spend a great deal of time making sure each student is placed correctly. Please note that each of these paths can end with college courses or college readiness courses.
