“Inventing” a dual core Itanium® CPU • The standard Intel cartridge packaging is not at maximum density – – CPU silicon chip is in a package, on a carrier board, with power on the end The basic chip and package could be packed much more densely Intel CPU “carrier” board Industry-standard Itanium 2® power pod (DC to DC power conversion) Intel CPU chip inside package HP CPU “carrier” board HP external cache and controller chip HP power solution (goes on top rather than on the end) 9/25/2020 BCS Server Update 13

Positioning the Itanium® choices • The HP mx 2 module on the previous slide

Positioning the Itanium® choices • The HP mx 2 module on the previous slide will be used in the same systems as the standard Intel CPUs – • Intel standard single core Itanium® CPUs will be the best choice for technical computing servers and commercial analytics (SAS, cplex, etc. ) – – • Two Madison chips with the off chip cache and cache controller fit in the same power, thermal, and physical space as one Intel standard CPU • We have to turn the CPU clock down a few hundred MHz to make this happen, but it is still a big win More bandwidth per core and no frequency degradation Large external cache usually does not help these workloads Use Madison in 2003, Madison 9 M in 2004 Will likely stick with single core SKU of Montecito in 2005 Threaded commercial apps will get better price/performance with more cores (even though they are a bit slower) and an external cache – 9/25/2020 Use mx 2 module in 1 H 04 then dual core SKU of Montecito in 2005 BCS Server Update 14
