ITALIAN SCHOOL SYSTEM

MAIN STEPS OF ITALIAN EDUCATION: • PRIMARY SCHOOL: from 6 to 10 years old (5 years long) • MIDDLE SCHOOL: from 11 to 13 years old (3 years long) • SECONDARY SCHOOL: from 14 to 18 years old (5 years long) SCHOOL ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY UNTIL 16 YEARS OF AGE (SECOND YEAR OF SECONDARY SCHOOL)

WHAT TYPE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL CAN YOU ATTEND IN ITALY? General Secondary education: It prepares students for their university studies. There are different kinds of Secondary Schools: Scientific, Linguistic, Classic, Social, Economic. Technical Schools: They prepare students for their working career in the fields of: Economy, Industry, Computering, Aeronautics, Agricolture, Tourism, Hotelling, Office.

WHAT SUBJECTS DO WE STUDY? In scientific high schools subjects are divided in two main areas: SCIENTIFIC AREA: HUMANISTIC AREA: • • • • Mathematics Physics Biology Chemistry Drawing ICT Italian Latin English History Geography Philosophy Art Religion

HOW’S THE SCHOOL ORGANISED? • Lessons are held from Monday to Friday from 8. 00 to 14. 00. • Teachers don’t have a fixed room, they move from class to class. • Students don’t have to wear a uniform, there is no dress code. • Students have to buy their own books and they are rather expensive.

STUDENTS’ LIFE IN THE SCHOOL • Students are assigned to a class and follow the group along all their curriculum, therefore they stay together for five years. • Classes are made of 25 to 30 students of both sexes. • Every year students elect their representatives, who will take part in the management of the school together with representatives of teachers and parents. • Every month students hold a general assembly to discuss social problems or internal matters.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE SCHOOL Our School works for the well being of its students, therefore it offers tutoring in multiples areas: • Health education, prevention of alcohol and drug abuse, education to sport. • Psychological counseling , prevention of bullying and food disorders, analysis of learner’s needs and difficulties.
