What is the aim of the Black History Month project ? To understand how your life is shaped by black people around the world. Present what you have learnt in a creative way. This may be a poster or model. These will be put on display at school to celebrate all that you have learned.
How do inventions make my life easier? How has your life been shaped by those who have come before you? Scientists & Inventors Let’s take a look at some… Yo u
Black Inventor Garrett Morgan The Three-Light Traffic Light, Invented by Garrett Morgan in 1923 Garrett Morgan came up with several significant inventions, including an improved sewing machine and the gas mask. However, one of Morgan's most influential inventions was the improved traffic light. Without his innovation, drivers across the nation would be directed by a two-light system- History. com Year 1 & 2 - Everyday materials Year 3 - Light Year 4 & 6 – Electricity
Black Inventor Dr Mark Richards Develops instrumentation to monitor and map air quality in real time- Dr Mark Richards is an atmospheric physicist and Lecturer at Imperial College London. His main research interest is in the area of remote sensing of trace gases in the atmosphere, with particular emphasis on air quality and urban air pollution. He also co-founded a technology business (Duvas Technologies) that develops instrumentation to monitor and map air quality in real time (a bit like a weather map but for air pollution). Black Inventor Lewis Latimer Carbon Light Bulb Filament, Invented by Lewis Latimer in 1881 The light bulb itself was invented by Thomas Edison, but the innovation used to create longer-lasting light bulbs with a carbon filament came from African-American inventor Lewis Latimer. He also designed an improved railroad car bathroom and an early air conditioning unit. Year 1 & 2 - Everyday materials Year 3 - Light Year 4 & 6 – Electricity History. com

Black Inventor Marie Van Brittan Brown Home Security System, Co-Invented by Mary Van Brittan Brown in 1966 Year 4– Sound In 1966, Brown invented a system that used a camera that could slide into and look through four peepholes in her front door. The camera’s view would then appear on a monitor in her home, so she could survey any potentially unwanted guests. She added other features to the system, including a microphone to speak to anyone at the door, a button to unlock the door, and a button to contact the police. Home security systems commonly used today took various elements from her design. History. com
