ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE IS NOT A STYLE WHAT’S A STYLE? It’s a set of repeating elements

ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE… … is a way of thinking about design. What does it mean? It means that organic architecture is an architectural idea which promotes harmony between: Man – made structure Nature

THANKS TO ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE… …buildings and surroundings become part of a unified and interrelated composition, and in this way each building is unique.

PAY ATTENTION! ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE… … is not a style of Nature’s imitation, but rather, a reinterpretation of Nature’s principles to build natural forms.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT A SHORT BIOGRAPHY He was born in Wisconsin in 1867. His career grew up in the 19 th century under the influence of the great American architect Louis Sullivan. But his greatest buildings were designed in the 20 th century. He died in 1959.

WRIGHT’S WAY OF THINKING He thought that the cosmos was made up of the four elements: EARTH AIR FIRE WATER All of these elements play their part in many houses by Wright.

EARTH AIR It is present in exposed brickwork, beautifully crafted, inside and out. An Organic house has many doors and French Windows opening into the garden and on terraces and balconies that invite to spend many time outside. WATER Water is less easy to bring into a house in a visible way, but Wright managed it. The most important example of this is Fallingwater, in Pennsylvania, a house built over a waterfall FIRE Wright saw the hearth as the symbolic and literal centre of the home. So many of his hiouse are planned around a central fireplace.

WRIGHT’S IDEAS Wright was insistent on the close relationship between inside and outside, house and garden. His masonry of balconies often includes planters and in this way the green world of the garden is brought right up to the house.
