Zionism � Began in the late 1800 s � Definition: desire to create a homeland for the Jewish people in what used to be the Kingdom of Israel Increased immigration of European Jews to area � Area was controlled by the Ottoman Empire and inhabited by Palestinians

Balfour Doctrine � Written in 1917 Before Britain got control of Palestine � Official British statement to Zionist leaders saying: Britain supported a state for the Jews as long as it did not harm the “civil and religious rights of the non-Jewish citizens of Palestine” � Led to an increase in tensions between Palestinians and Jews
