About the Program One of the vehicles used by AMS to fulfill this divine injunction was the establishment of the Al-Furqan summer School program in 1982. The American Moslem Society is a non profit, independent organization which was established in the year of 1938 to be the first Islamic organization that has existed since then. They started the program around 60 -70 students, and 3 teachers. The program started only for boys Not all teachers are certified but they must have knowledge in what they will be teaching and prior experience in teaching and dealing with children and adult. Students are taught the Arabic language, Islamic studies, Country laws and not much of English. In the year of 2007 students decided to volunteer and opened an Islamic cube in Dearborn District school and Henry Ford College. I was a member of the Islamic club at Edesl Ford High School. They started a girl’s summer program in 2008. They had around 175 students. This was for the girl’s summer program. Boys and girls are separated after age 12 for religion reason. The school currently serves about 700 students and 11 teachers and operates on the weekend during the school year and five days a week during the summer break.

Advantages of the program ü Keep students away from streets and games ü Help student to expose different language and culture ü Provides the attendees with a great learning experience and a summer packed with fun. Their time is utilized as they learn about their religion, language, showcase their talents and socialize with others. ü Known talents are developed and new ones are discovered through leadership training, weekly field trips, and opportunities to volunteer and make a difference in their community. ü Attendees are constantly exposed to new and exciting experiences and they learn to be productive. They focus on bringing up young and responsible youth who understand their role in life and society, responsibilities towards themselves, their families and their communities. ü The program is very affordable compared to other summer programs in the area.

Disadvantages of the program Funding is usually low and resources are limited which effects the quality and quantity of the activities provided. More time is spent on Arabic not on English where they need English. Time is spent on academic subjects instead of preparing students for the next year.

How the program effects management Finding ways to fund the program can sometimes be a struggle. On the other hand, they are building bonds with the community which in turn helps them better understand its needs and how they can be met. Improving the quality of the programs they provide through constant evaluation and gaining experience on how to deal with the youth and the community.

My Thoughts on the program The program help students to learn both languages; Arabic and English. I hope In the future community leaders and members will realize the importance of supporting programs like these and that they can continue providing the children with what they need to be successful in their lives and the hereafter. Every year the AMS is expanding the Islamic Summer School program.
