It means "struggle” or “strive”. • The "greater jihad” in the Quran is that of the soul, of the tongue, of the pen, of faith, of morality, etc. The "smaller jihad" is that of arms. Ø Three levels: – Personal: That of the soul – Verbal: "The most excellent jihad is the speaking of truth in the face of a tyrant" – Physical: Combat waged in defense against oppression and transgression.
