Basic Beliefs of Islam • Only one god, “Allah” • Muhammad is the messenger of god. • It is believed that prophets are people chosen by god to be taught about faith. • They believe in an after life
Origin of the Religion • They believe that the word Islam started with Adam the first man. • The religion started in Mecca, Saudi Arabia when Muhammad was born in 570. • Muhammad met a man named gabriel telling him about god, then the meassage was spread.
Symbols and Traditions • The star and crescent which represent Islamic culture. • The Qur'an is a book which holds all Islamic history. • The colours green, black, white and red are present in many Islamic symbols.
Gods and Prophets • They believed in one god. • Allah means god in Arabic. • They believed that prophets are people chosen to serve god and spread his message.
Islam in the World • Second most popular religion. • 25% of the world’s population believe in Islam. • It is a religion that is growing rapidly throughout the world. • Practiced in mostly Asia, Africa, Caribbean and Middle East. • Religious cities include Mecca, Jerusalem, Istanbul and Medina.
Clothing Women: • Have to wear cloth full body, except hands and face • Loose fit, can’t show body shape Men: • Must cover shoulders to legs • Can’t wear anything attractive • Must wear modestly
