Origin ● 610 C. E. in Saudi Arabia ● Muslims believe the Qur’an was given by God through the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad. ● Qur’an- Sacred book of Islam
Battle of Tours ● Muslims set out on a quest to expand the borders of Islam into modern day France. ● The Merovingian Frankish empire wasn’t very stable but they established a strong army. ● The Muslim commander, Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafigi was killed. ● The Muslims deserted their campsite and left everything behind. ● The Muslims were eventually banned from France which delayed the spread of Islam religion.
Death of Ali ● Ali ruled over the Muslim empire as Caliph. ● Muslims regard Ali and his descendants, Hassan and Hussein, as the rightful successors of Mohammed. ● Disagreements over succession led Islam to split into two parts: the Sunni and the Shi’a. ● Muslims went into a civil war with each other for over a century.
Shi’a and Sunni Similarities ● ● Allah is the one and only true God The use of statues and pictures was not permitted Jesus was a virgin birth Jesus did not die on the cross but will return to earth in the future ● A man may marry up to four women
Shi’a and Sunni (continued) Differences ● Sunni has a much larger population ● Shi’a has more places of worship than Sunni such as a Mosque, Imambarah, or Eidgah ● Both celebrate different holy days
The Rise of Baghdad - 762 C. E. - Abbasid dynasty took rule of the Muslim world and settled in Baghdad - Baghdad became a center of education and culture - This began the Golden Age of Islamic civilization
Fall of Baghdad - After 500 years, the Abbasid rule began to decline. - 1253 C. E. - Baghdad was destroyed by the mongols - Over 100, 000 residents were slaughtered - Libraries, Mosques, and irrigation canals were looted and destroyed
Fall of Baghdad (continued) - Books were thrown into Tigris and Euphrates - Tigris and Euphrates reportedly ran black with blood and ink - This began a period of decline and contributed to wars and battles
Islam Today ● Islam is the second largest religion in the world. ● Still split into the Shi’a and Sunni ● It is a monotheistic religion believing the teachings of Muhammad as the Prophet of Allah.
Five Pillars of Islam ● Shahadah - Reciting the Muslim profession of faith. ● Salat - Performing prayers five times a day. ● Zakat - Paying a charity tax to help the needy. ● Sawm - Fasting during the month of Ramadan. ● Hajj - Pilgrimage to Mecca.
