Purpose • ISIC • To classify producing units (establishments, enterprises, …) based on their primary activity • Separate categories needed only for activities that can be primary • CPC • “central” product classification that allows linkage to other product classifications (goods and services), e. g. HS, EBOPS • Reference classification for services • Scope depends on framework in which classification is used • Primary use: measurement of production 3

ISIC categories related to water • In ISIC Rev. 4: • Divisions 36 and 37 are part of the same section (E - Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities), reflecting actual organization of production • Distinction between divisions 36 and 49 (transport) is based on “distribution” vs. “transport” • Activities carried out for own use, such as extracting of water from the ground for own production purposes, are not separately recognized in ISIC, since they are not a primary activity • For detailed accounts, the activity is that of ISIC 36 7
