Newton Was born in 1642 n In England n Had a rough childhood… n ¨ His mom left him when he was 3 years old ¨ He lived with his grandparents

Attended Cambridge University in England n Read many books by famous thinkers n Had to leave because of the plague n Spent his time sitting around thinking… n n. And came up with a way to explain gravity!

n He came up with many ideas, but never wanted to publish them n He was afraid of what other people would think ¨ He n hated to be criticized He only wrote down his ideas when he thought somebody else might do it before he did!

n He ended up writing down some pretty big ideas, and is credited with: ¨ The explanation of gravity ¨ Creating calculus (a type of math) ¨ A new theory of light and color ¨ Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion ¨ The invention of the reflecting telescope n His most important work was the Principia, which was published in 1687

Newton often had mental breakdowns and would spend many nights awake n He also spent a lot of time fighting with Robert Hooke, another scientist at the time n Both were members of the Royal Society n ¨ Hooke was in charge of experiments ¨ Newton later became the president n Newton played a major part in the “Scientific Revolution”

Newton was a professor of optics, but later became “Master of the Mint” n He was in charge of all the money in England! n He died in 1722 n He was the first scientist to be buried at Westminster Abbey n
