ISA preparation lesson 1. Objectives To recall the key HSW words and definitions To be able to identify the main variables To be able to write a clear hypothesis
Controlled Assessment Unit - CAU Investigative Skills Assessment - ISA 1 • Introduce the context of the investigation 2 • Planning and preparation 3 • Complete the planning sheet and write a blank table 4 • ISA section 1 exam 5 • Practical 6 • Complete practical and draw a graph of your results 7 • ISA section 2 exam
To start with… 1. In your booklet you have a list of key words. 2. Discuss with your partner and try to define as many as you can…. write your answers in the 1 st table. 3. Around the room you have the definitions…see if you were correct? 4. Write your final definitions in the second table.
Show me! • Write the key words on your mini white boards as I read the definitions
Variables. . • Independent • Dependent • Control
Booklet • For each experiment independently identify the dependent, independent and control variables. • 5 mins • Peer review- check with your partner if you have the same.
What does Hypothesis mean? An idea you can test Sort of like a prediction Answers the questions you are asking
If I do …… then …… will happen Task: for each hypothesis write down the Independent variable and the dependent variable Extension: what control variables are there for each hypothesis? • If I open the tap more, then it will increase the flow of water • If I Raise the temperature of a cup of water , then the mass of sugar that dissolves will increase • If a plant receives fertilizer, then it will grow to be bigger than a plant that does not receive fertilizer • If I put fenders on a bicycle then they will keep the rider dry when riding through puddles
Writing a hypothesis from a question Task: for each question- write your own hypothesis Extension: can some experiments have another hypothesis? If I give my teacher chocolate, will they stop giving me more homework? What effect does studying with music have on student test scores? What effect does light have on plant growth? What is the effect of watering plants on their growth height? Does the presence of leaves on trees affect the number of birds nests? Does acid rain in water affect the fish population? Does intake of calcium affect bone strength? Does the height of ramp affect the speed of a car? Does temperature affect the time taken for sugar to dissolve?
