Statistics on the divide of gender in the games industry • I found a statistic online from statistica where it showed a statistic of games developers worldwide from 2014 and 2017. • https: //www. statista. com/statistics/453634/game-developer-genderdistribution-worldwide/
Why is it a problem that there is such a big gender pay gap • One of my contacts Kevin raised an interesting figure to me that regarded Rockstar North straight from the GOV website from April 5 th 2017, which was: • Women’s mean hourly rate is 64% lower than men’s • In other words when comparing mean hourly rates, women earn 36 p for every £ 1 that men earn. • Women’s median hourly rate is 31. 8% lower than men’s • In other words when comparing median hourly rates, women earn 68 p for every £ 1 that men earn. • Referance: • https: //gender-pay-gap. service. gov. uk/Employer/Zd. What are companies doing to help this? • Kevin said to me that his studio in particular (Montreal, Ubisoft), is specifically looking to hire more female programmers, instead of males which I found to be intriguing. • He also mentioned that there is several woman mentorship companies that are looking to lead woman down a direction of games and ease entry into the industry
How have statistics changed over the years • In the last three years, I have seen a growing interest towards female representation within the gaming industry from both women and men. This has led to a growth of organisations that can be seen as stronger means of communication to voice the issues and challenges that all females have to face daily. in these last years is the growth of communities that are actively making a difference both locally and globally. - Rosie • In my opinion the change is good and in creating a more diverse industry is only going to benefit people bringing many different minds together on projects, I cant see any bad in this.
Where is it going? • The world is coming more aware of the problem, in the workplace for example in harassment, wage gap etc and are slowly trying to create more equality for everyone, this is backed up by people that I have spoken too as well as research I have conducted myself, for example popular games company Zynga who have created the game Farmville where 40% of recent games were female, in comparison to years previously where in 2015 only 25%, this is only 1 statistic of many.
