Irregular Preterite ¬ There are several irregular verbs in the preterite. In this presentation, we’ll take a look at the most important ones.
Can you guess…? ¬ Here are some irregular preterite forms. Can you guess what the present verb form might be? ¬ yo vine ¬ él estuvo ¬ nosotros trajimos ¬ ellos fueron
¿Cómo te salió? ¬ vine > vengo ¬ estuvo > está ¬ trajimos > traemos ¬ fueron > van / son ¬ Some irregular preterite forms resemble their present forms, while others do not.
Bases ¬ How do you learn the irregulars? ¬ Learn them by base forms first. Start with these five: ¬ estar > estuv¬ tener > tuv¬ venir > vin¬ poder > pud¬ saber > sup-

Hacer ¬ hacer > hic– – – yo hice tú hiciste **él hizo** nosotros hicimos ellos hicieron ¬ It’s like the other irregular preterites, except it makes a spelling change in the él form: – hic- > hiz-
How about a two-for-one? ¬ ser > fu- = ir > fu– – – yo fui tú fuiste él fue nosotros fuimos vosotros fuisteis ellos fueron ¬ It’s the same form for both verbs, and the endings are not identical to the other irregular preterite verbs.
Two “kind of” irregulars ¬ dar > d- / ver > v– – – yo di / yo vi tú diste / tú viste él dio / él vio nosotros dimos / vimos vosotros disteis / visteis ellos dieron / vieron ¬ We saw ver in the previous presentation; dar works in the same way, even though it’s an – ar verb.
