Page 7
Write words and phrases around the image that describe the shadowy figure. Extending meaning of the words and simple phrases with the addition of adjectives e. g. dark, shadowy figure; silent sentinel; imposing figure silently watching; etc, and write these on strips of paper. Ask your child to choose a favourite phrase to write on their strip of paper. Listen to the Youtube video of the teacher reading from the opening of the book to the end of p 6 ‘He was hearing the sea. ’ Ask child to sketch their own image of the Iron Man on top of the cliff and to write a short paragraph describing what the Iron Man may be able to see.
What do you think the Iron Man might be able to see? Refer back to your original predictions. Be as inventive as possible! Invite your child to respond to the opening of the story by posing questions such as what do you know? What kind of story do you think this might be? Who is the Iron Man? What might happen next? You may wish for the children to record initial responses, questions and predictions in their reading journals.
TUESDAY 7 TH APRIL 2020 LESSON 2 LO: TO CREATE A READERS' THEATRE SCRIPT FOR A PERFORMANCE READING.
Listen to the Youtube video of the teacher reading from the opening page until ‘. . . off the cliff, into nothingness. ’ Share the double page spread from page 10 and 11(on next slide). Read it together and share their thoughts on the layout of the text and the descriptions. Which words jump out at you?
IT'S TIME TO PERFORM! Work with your child to create a readers' theatre script using this text for a performance reading. You might provide the text for the children to text mark and consider how the words might be read for effect. For example, some lines could be read by your child and then you, you may want to include the whole family! Some words repeated and volume added to others. ‘Crash’ could be read very loudly and ‘silence’ whispered. Discuss intonation, tone, volume and possible actions. Rehearse, refine and perform. Sound effects could be added using voices or musical instruments for the sea and the wind Record it! We are working on creating a place for your children to share their work as a class.
WEDNESDAY 8 TH APRIL 2020 LESSON 3 LO: TO CREATE A STORY MAP OF CHAPTER ONE.
Ask your child what do we know about the Iron Man so far? Ask your child to make a note of one thing they now about the character. Invite children to give reasons for their opinions, referring back to the text. Use sentence prompts to support oral responses. For example: I know the Iron Man. . . I know this because. . . Model this for your child.
Listen to the whole of chapter 1, noting key events on paper to support their recall later in the session. Discuss likes, dislikes, puzzles and connections. What does the story remind them of? What questions still need answering? Task: Story map the story so far, layering in some of the description and feelings about the characters gained from the earlier sessions. Consider what we know about the Iron Man and what we still need to find out about.
