Open Data • What is Open Data? • “A piece of data or content is open if anyone is free to use, reuse, and redistribute it- subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and/or share-alike” (Open Data Handbook) • Open Knowledge defines Open as “anyone can freely access, use, modify, and share for any purpose (subject, at most, to requirements that preserve provenance and openness). ” • The concept of Open Data is about making data held by public bodies available and easily accessible online for reuse and redistribution.

Open Data Initiative • Progress to Date • National Open Data portal in place data. gov. ie • A technical framework for open data developed – this ensures that data is published in a consistent way and meet clearly defined standards • Governance arrangements put in place (Open Data Governance Board and Public Bodies Working Group) • Foundation document for the development of an Open Data Strategy published in 2015 • Engagement with public bodies to identify high value datasets • Engagement with stakeholders to promote the Open Data initiative • National Open Data Strategy 2017 – 2022 published and implementation underway

Open Data Strategy 2017 -2022 • Two Core Objectives • publication of high value

Open Data Strategy 2017 -2022 • Two Core Objectives • publication of high value government data in open format, making it publicly available and freely reusable • engaging with a broad community of stakeholders to promote its social and economic benefits 7 themes • broaden the range of public bodies actively engaged in the Open Data initiative; • broaden the scope of the Initiative and improve the quality, quantity and range of datasets available on the Portal data. gov. ie; • continued engagement with stakeholders and encourage the use of Open Data; • support and encourage various groups of Open Data Users, • the provision of a framework to support and train public bodies in their Open Data activities; • evaluation of the impacts and benefits of the Initiative; and • ensuring that effective governance structures are in place to implement the Strategy.

Implementation of Strategy • Framework for Open Data Training (single supplier) has been put

Implementation of Strategy • Framework for Open Data Training (single supplier) has been put in place. The first 4 training courses took place in September. 4 more courses taking place in October. • Framework for Open Data Technical support (multi-supplier) has been put in place with contracts signed with 8 companies for each of 2 Lots • Lot 1 Technical Assistance and Support for Open Data Management Identification, Preparation, Publication and Maintenance • Lot 2 Technical Assistance and Support for the Use of Data Visualisation and Analytics Tools • Open Data Engagement Fund for 2017/2018 to promote the usage of data available on the national open data portal – launched 3 rd October. Closing date 25 th Oct. • Open Data Unit to begin meeting with public bodies – identification of high value datasets, publication plans
