Population Censuses in Portugal - Resumed History l Modern set of population censuses – 1864, 1878, 1890, 1900, 1911, 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1981, 1991, 2001 Previous census set is not considered equivalent to that one because it didn’t comply with the basic principles defined at the International Statistical Congress held in Bruxels in 1853. l Since 1981 the reference year and census time were adjusted in order to comply with the EU regulations on this subject. l
(Continued) – Since 1970, 2 censuses (Population and Housing) were carried out at same time. This means mostly that a larger number of variables was included in order to better characterize the housing. l l l Every census carried out in Portugal up to now was done with an exhaustive data collection. Also the data treatment was done exhaustively with the exception of 1970. Only the last 3 censuses have ready the respective data basis. Total resident population for the last 3 censuses: – 1981: 9. 833. 014 – 1991: 9. 867. 147 – 2001: 10. 356. 117
Portugal – IPUMS participation l l l Data samples (systematic) of the last 3 censuses should be supplied; The sample rate is 5% of every living quarter/housing unit; or The sample rate is 5% of every housing unit plus 5% of every individual living at a collective dwelling; The maximum geographic breakdown inserted in each register must be a geographic unit greater than 200. 000 residents; Urban/rural classification for each statistical unit, depending on the size of the locality to which belong: with less than 2000 inhabitants (rural); 2000 or more inhabitants (urban);
Resident population according to 2001 Census by NUTS II region
